Wizards of the Coast Era

Where it all started. Wizards of the Coast licensed the Pokemon TCG for the English market, adapting and repackaging Japanese sets for Western audiences. These early sets defined the hobby and produced some of the most valuable cards in existence.

The Pokemon Company took over publishing from Wizards of the Coast and introduced the EX mechanic: powerful Pokemon with a two-prize knockout penalty. The era ran alongside the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald video games, and brought holographic EX cards that collectors still pursue today.

The Unova era brought full-art cards into the mainstream and introduced the EX mechanic in its modern form. Full Art Supporters became chase cards for the first time, and the era's Secret Rares established a gold-bordered template that continues today.

The Kalos generation introduced Mega Evolution to the TCG and the BREAK mechanic. Evolutions, the final XY set, was a 20th anniversary celebration that reprinted Base Set artwork, and its sealed product has become one of the most collected modern items.

The Alola generation introduced GX cards with once-per-game GX attacks, and the Tag Team mechanic paired two or three Pokemon on a single card. Hidden Fates and its Shiny Vault subset became one of the most opened products in the TCG's history.

The Galar generation introduced V, VMAX, and VSTAR mechanics across a prolific run of sets. Alt Art cards became the defining chase category, Trainer Gallery subsets added character art, and special sets like Celebrations and Crown Zenith anchored the era.

Scarlet & Violet
2023 to 2025

The current generation replaced V and VSTAR with the Pokemon ex mechanic (lowercase "ex", distinct from the 2003 era). Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares became the primary chase categories. Pokemon 151 revived Kanto nostalgia, and Prismatic Evolutions brought Eeveelution mania to the Scarlet and Violet era.

Mega Evolution Era

The newest generation brings back the Mega Evolution mechanic in a new form. The Japanese side has been releasing sets since early 2025, with the English Mega Evolution set confirmed for September 2025. This era is actively expanding, with several upcoming releases confirmed for both markets.
