Christmas is nearly here, and the gift rush can get stressful, particularly for parents new to buying Pokémon cards.
If Pokémon cards are on their wishlists this Christmas, this guide will help you shop safely and confidently. You can also download three simple cheat-sheets to make it easier.
Why Now is the Perfect Time to Gift Pokémon Cards
- Two new sets have just been released. Phantasmal Flames and Mega Evolution
- Pokémon cards combine collecting, playing and opening. They’re more than just a toy.
What Makes a Great Starter Gift (and Keeps It Fun)
When you’re buying for your child or for someone new to the hobby, keep it simple and fun:
- Choose their favourite Pokémon or style of cards (eg. Charizard, EX, Illustration Rare, Cute).
- Avoid stressing over “must-invest” cards. Value is less important than joy and engagement.
-
For sealed products, your best chance is checking big stores first thing in the morning or visiting your local game store.
How to Buy Confidently Without Getting Overwhelmed
Rather than deep collector-level tactics, here are three parent-friendly checks you can use.
1. Seller Basics
- Make sure the seller or store has good reviews or trusted references.
- Check the checkout is secure (shows “https://”).
- Use payment methods that protect you (eg. PayPal Goods & Services).
- If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
2. Fun + Authenticity
- Ask the seller for a photo showing the card right now, ideally with a date or a handwritten note.*
- Don’t worry if you don’t know every set number or detail. Focus on whether the photos look real, there are no spelling mistakes or obvious damage the seller might be omitting.
- For younger kids, it’s OK if the card isn’t mint condition. The artwork and experience are what count. My son once took his cinderace for a swim and although damaged, he still loves the card.
*At Monster Mart, we’re happy to send real photos of any card from our store so you can check it before purchasing.
3. Storage & Care (Especially in tropical climates)
Since you’re in Australia, heat/humidity can affect cards:
- Make sure any card is sleeved and toploaded (a hard plastic sleeve).
- After opening, keep favourites away from sunlight, moisture and little siblings who might want to handle them.
